1. Research Background
Wayang Kulit, as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, requires continuous innovation and international promotion to maintain its existence. Raden Aryo Temenggung Ki Haji Gunarto Talijendra, S.H., M.M. is not only known as a businessman but has also emerged as a prominent puppeteer (Dalang) whose work has transcended national borders. His unique performance style, combined with academic collaboration, has positioned Wayang Kulit on the global stage, particularly in Europe, with a schedule fully booked until 2027.
2. Research Objectives
To document the international performance trajectory of Ki Gunarto Talijendra across various continents.
To analyze the unique artistic characteristics and innovations introduced, specifically the integration of acrobatic movements (koprol) within the performance.
To map the demand and reception of Wayang Kulit in international academic and public spheres.
To serve as a reference for cultural diplomacy and art preservation strategies.
3. Scope and Limitation
This study focuses on the performance records and international career development of Ki Gunarto Talijendra from his debut abroad until the projected schedule up to 2027. The geographical scope includes performances in Canada, China, Turkey, Hong Kong, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan, with specific emphasis on the growing market in Europe.
4. Research Method
A. Data Collection Method
Direct Observation: Systematic observation and documentation of every performance carried out by Ki Dalang Sugiyanto Kuncaraningrat, recording stage actions, character voices, and unique movements.
Interview: In-depth interviews with the artist, organizers, and academic institutions regarding the demand and impact of the performances.
Document Study: Analysis of performance schedules, invitation letters from universities, international contracts, and media coverage to verify the global reach and booking status until 2027.
B. Data Analysis Technique
Data obtained will be analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. The information regarding performance locations, audience reception, and artistic uniqueness will be compiled, verified, and presented in a systematic narrative to illustrate the phenomenon of “Wayang Kulit Going International.”
5. Innovation and Distinctiveness
This research highlights a specific variable of artistic innovation: the ability to perform acrobatic movements (koprol) up to 50 times during the performance. This technique is studied as a differentiator and a unique attraction that captivates international audiences, distinguishing it from conventional Wayang Kulit performances.
